As the weather starts to settle and the days are longer, Te Anau turns from a sleepy, somewhat peaceful town into a bustling hive of activity.
From the office I can hear boats and jet skis on the water and the park emits a quiet hum from excited guests keen to explore the area. The familiar hum of helicopter rotors penetrate the Fiordland skyline and I start to feel that familiar feeling that creeps up on me every summer, FOMO (fear of missing out.) A lucky group of people are about to embark on a truly once in a lifetime experience, Fiordland by air.
The remoteness of Fiordland is one of the most valuable parts of its beauty. The fact that most of it is only accessibly by air really does add to the magic of hovering over wilderness that is completely untouched. The skies are clear for miles with only the wildlife joining you as you float over mountain ranges and hidden lakes.
The real icing on the cake is a mountain top landing where you truly will feel like you are on top of the world. There are not many places left in the world that you can see for miles and there is not one trace of another living soul having been here before you.
All tours taken from Te Anau have very experienced pilots who have spent years navigating Fiordland and its ever-changing weather and wind currents. Even someone who may not usually entertain the thought of flying through this magnificent landscape can relax knowing they are in the safest hands. Why not start off small and join a short local fly over the Kepler Mountains. The view from the top of the world is second to none and will have you booking a 2hour flight through Fiordland for your next trip!
Looking for something more than just a sightseeing trip? For those of you keen on hunting and fishing and looking for a trip of a lifetime, these guys can drop you in to your secret spot piece of cake!
Feeling fit but that grunt up to Luxmore Hut sounds too exhausting? Why not get flown to the top for a quick drop off. Take in the amazing views of Lake Te Anau before starting your hike on foot to the water’s edge.
Or are you looking at making the most out of your Fiordland experience and you’re keen to see it all while you’re here? Dusky Sound, Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound can be visited in one huge 3 hour tour with three stunning landings. You’d walk away from this trip with a wealth of information and photos you will never get tired of looking back on!
Get off the beaten track and see this beautiful part of the world from the air. It’s an experience I find hard to put into words. It’s magic. If you’re on the fence and need a little push, visit the cinema in Te Anau and watch the Ata Whenua film. Seeing it for yourself will blow you away.Back to Blog Page
