Whenever I visit a new town, I’m interested to know… “what do the locals do for fun around here?” Yes, I can google “Top 10 things to do in ‘such n such’” but there’s nothing better than hearing it straight from someone who walks the walk. So here I am, a local, sharing a few of my top picks.
Hike part of the Kepler track.
Travellers come to Te Anau to tame the multi day Kepler track but don’t let that frighten you off. You can walk parts of the Kepler as a day walk up to Luxmore Hut or simply cross the control gates and walk a few km’s through stunning native bush to Doc bay.
Black Dog Bar.
The Black dog bar has an awesome selection of local beer and wine. Sit around the fire on a chilly winter evening sipping on a mulled wine or enjoy the covered outdoor area on a balmy summer’s night.
Swim in the lake.
Not always an obvious choice in our snow cap mountain bordered lake but don’t let winter put you off. You’ll see locals braving the cold so whether you are here for our colder winter months or sunbathing on the shore for your summer holiday, the cool fresh water will leave you feeling years younger. Head down towards the marina, there is an excellent swimming spot that even has a pontoon.
Jump off the wharf.
Yes, everyone knows about Te Anau’s iconic wharf down by the yacht club but not that many people have the nerve to jump off. Double check there’s plenty of water in the lake and jump to your hearts content.
Bao Now
One of my fave food stops in Te Anau. From Boas to Sushi bowls they put a kiwi twist on some international favourites!
Jam Night.
Head down to the Ranch Bar and Grill on a Thursday night for a real local’s experience, Jam night. Locals are encouraged to jump on stage whether they have a talent for singing or playing an instrument it’s a fun night out to sit back and listen or get up for a boogie.
Lake Marian Hike.
3.1km of pure Fiordland beauty. If you’re keen to really get your limbs moving, take the drive to the
Hollyford carpark to start your adventure in to our beautiful backyard. Top tip: The track can get
quite steep and sometimes slippery as you head up to the Lake so be careful.
Duration: 3 hours return.
