When I think of New Zealand, and particularly Southland, farming is one of the first things that comes to mind.
For many New Zealanders farming is their way of life, it is part of who we are. Many kiwi kids have memories of growing up on the farm, surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.
As a Southland kid, most mornings began with a bowl of hot weetbix, followed by putting on a pair of red band gummies and wandering out into the farm.
High Country farming is infamous for Merino sheep- the source of one of New Zealand’s most famous exports, Merino Wool products. If you have some time, I would highly recommend taking a visit to the Walter Peak High Country Farm, nestled along the edges of the picturesque Lake Wakatipu.
The farm tour itself is extremely interactive and there is something to keep everyone happy. The sheep shearing demonstration is definitely a highlight. Watching the farm dogs round the sheep up from the paddocks with remarkable skill and precision is certainly a sight to behold. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to get up close and personal with the deer, sheep and highland cattle by handfeeding these beautiful animals.
Not only do you get to see how a New Zealand High Country Farm works, but the trip there is across Lake Wakatipu on the TSS Earnslaw. The Earnslaw, or as the locals know it “The Lady of the Lake”, is a Queenstown icon. First launched in 1912, the same year as the Titanic, she has been restored back to her original condition and really is a beautiful work of art.
I almost forgot the best part, THE FOOD! If you are going to visit Walter Peak on the Earnslaw then make sure to add on the BBQ Lunch or Dinner. It is mouth-wateringly good! And the dessert bar- make sure to leave plenty of room for the dessert bar!
